EIGRP Notes Part 3

EIGRP Notes Part 3

Enabling EIGRP:
Router(confi)# router eigrp

Adding a network to EIGRP:
Router(config-network)# network [wildcard mask]
All interfaces belonging to the specified network will become EIGRP capable and advertised via EIGRP.EIGRP will summarize to classful boundaries by default.

An interface can be set to ''passive'' to prevent advertisement:

Router(config-router)# passive-interface
If an interface is included in the network configuration but set to passive, it will still be included in EIGRP advertisements. If an interface is not included in an EIGRP network, it will not be advertised in EIGRP.

Summarization in EIGRP

Summarization is key to preventing looping route queries (which leads to SIA condition).

Disable automatic summarization to classful addresses:
Router(config-router)# no auto-summary

Configure manual summarization on an interface:
Router(config-if)# ip summary-address eigrp

Stub Routers in EIGRP
Stub routers participate minimally in EIGRP, which reduces utilization of memory and CPU on the
router.
Often used in lieu of static routes in a hub-spoke topology to provide a standard configuration for all spoke routers.
Router(config-router)# eigrp stub [options]

receive-only - Prevents the router from advertising any routes
connected - Permits advertisement of connected networks (default)
static - Permits redistribution of static routes
summary - Advertises summary routes (default)

T-Mobile invites us to 'come experience the HTC HD2' on March 16; release on the 24th? (update: or 23rd!)

Like clockwork, we've just been dropped a line by T-Mobile USA asking us to join them for a very special media event to check out the HTC HD2 -- "a larger than life entertainment powerhouse" -- in fabulous New York City on the evening of March 16. That lines up nicely with the company's earlier assurances that we'd see a launch in March -- but what day in March, exactly? Well, we're hearing from a number of tipsters (including trusted sources) that the 24th is the day this thing breaks loose at retail, so set your watches and calendars accordingly -- assuming you haven't been wooed into Windows Phone 7 Series' tender, loving grasp, that is.

Update: MobiTV -- which has an app bundled with T-Mobile's version of the HD2 -- says the HD2 is launching on the 23rd, and frankly, they're probably in a position to know. Thanks, Stephen!

Analysts predict PS3 to emerge as victor of console wars

Even through Sony’s most recent network debacle and its constant search for profitability, research firm Strategic Analytics believes that the company’s Playstation 3 will rise up to dominate the ever-heated console wars in terms of lifetime units sold.

ps3 02 500 11

Strategy Analytics predicted that Sony will sell 127 million units over the course of the console’s life, although the Wii will still lead the PS3 in terms of annual sales. PCMag also says that the recent report also predicts that Nintendo will sell 103 million Wiis over the course of its existence. Strangely enough, numbers referring to anticipatedlifetimesales of Microsoft’s Xbox360 platform were not released. For 2010, SA predicted that salesof the Wii are expected to reach 17.5 million units; the PlayStation 3 will sell 14.0 million; the Xbox 360, 10.5 million; and the PS2, 5.5 million.

In the time being, both Sony and Microsoft appear to be steering their respective game console architectures toward new directions. Sony is rumored to have a mobile gaming platform in the works, and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has publicly hinted at the possibility of new form factors for the Xbox platform.

TiVo posts $10.2m loss, remains on deathwatch

We've had TiVo firmly on deathwatch since 2005, and although the company's shares have recently surged with the launch of the TiVo Premiere and another legal victory over Echostar, things are still looking somewhat bleak: the Q4 numbers are in, and everyone's favorite DVR company just posted a $10.2m loss. Why? For the same reason that's plagued the company for five damn years now: it's hard to sign up new subscribers when the cable company offers a similar good-enough product for less money, especially when TiVo can't access cable VOD. And let's be brutally honest here: we love TiVo and we're more than excited to get our Premiere review units, but we don't think a revised interface is going to stem the tide -- almost every feature of the Premiere is available on the TiVo HD, after all. We've offered up our suggestions on how to re-energize the company in the past -- that new QWERTY remote is a great start -- but until TiVo stops playing ball with the same cable companies that actively try and cut it off at the knees and starts going for the jugular with features and pricing, we don't think things are going to get any better.

Another one bites the dust: Cisco steps out of the WiMAX game

It's still far, far too early to call WiMAX a dead technology, but with the second major infrastructure supplier moving away from it in as many months, that's a pretty damning sign, isn't it? After Alcatel Lucent's announcement that it would be scaling back WiMAX investment last month, Cisco has now pulled the plug on its own efforts, citing a desire to stay as "radio-agnostic" as possible in the 4G race. That makes sense for a company that hasn't traditionally played in the wireless game the same way stalwarts like Ericsson and Nokia Siemens have, but the move still lies in stark contrast to Cisco's 2007 acquisition of Navini Networks that brought a host of WiMAX-focused equipment into the fold. Of course, CDMA has managed just fine in the shadow of GSM's global domination over the past decade, so these early warning signs could amount a fat load of nothing by the time we've reached a 4G steady state.

Nokia files patent for self-regenerating phone battery, powered by piezoelectrics

Cellular phone giant Nokia has filed for a patent for a self-regenerating phone battery, or in their own words, a “piezoelectric kinetic energy harvester”. The patent essentially involves a battery thats contained within a first frame that is coupled to a second frame by one or more piezoelectric elements.

Nokia battery 1 540x280

Similar to theconceptof kinetic powered watches, which use motion to charge their batteries, Nokia’s technology proposes generating energy by kinetic movement. Nokia plans to use this energy to at least partially recharge the device battery.

Nokia envisions a phone in which its heavier components, say, the battery and radio transmitter circuits, travel along a pair of rails perpendicular to one another, and finally coming into contact with thecapacitor, which charges the battery.

New Egg ships fake Core i7-920 processors

Like most geeks that build their own computers, I have spent tons of money at New Egg over the years buying hardware and various other gear. Most shoppers of New Egg know the company to be reputable and to have great service. New Egg is in the middle of a controversy right now over allegedly fake Intel Core i7-920 processors that were shipped to customers.

corei7fake sg

Hard OCP reports that one user has supplied the publication with pictures of an Intel Core i7-920 CPU that appears to be in the correct box and look legit enough from the outside. The top of the CPU is even stamped with what looks to be correct markings.

Flip the CPU over and it becomes clear quickly that the processor is far from normal. The instruction manual with the CPU is a bunch of blank pages stapled together. Other sources reports that 300 of these counterfeit processors were purchased by New Egg from supplier D&H Distributing. Intel and New Egg are reportedly investigating the issue and users who received the fakes are getting real replacements. A video on YouTube has also surfaced of an allegedly fake Core i7 shipped by New Egg.

ASUS Eee PC 1005PR packs Broadcom Crystal HD and high-res screen

Today in Tales from ASUS we bring you the story of the 10.1-inch Eee PC 1005PR. While we didn't catch this one hiding out in the overflowing CeBIT booth, it appears big A has gone and swapped out the screen on the 1005PE for one with a 1366 x 768-resolution and tucked a Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator inside, which means the little lappie should be able to handle some YouTube HD (at least after you download 10.1 Beta 3). Nothing special apart from that, as it's standard netbook down the line: 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450, 1GB of RAM, and 320GB hard drive. No word on pricing or availability, but we're guessing it'll probably come in at under $400, like the Dell Mini 10 and HP Mini 210. It may not be a bad deal in the end, but we're still holding out for the Ion 2-equipped 1201PN and for ASUS to someday slow down the frenetic pace of Eee PC iteration.

Android NDK hits Release 3, brings OpenGL ES 2.0 access to devs

We know from a brief spat of iPhone 3GS controversy that OpenGL ES 2.0 brings a new level of immersive realism to 3D gaming on mobile devices, so Android developers (and users, for that matter) should be delighted to hear that a new release of the official Native Development Kit exposes its capabilities to anyone targeting Android 2.0 or higher. As a refresher, the so-called NDK is a bolt-on to the standard Android SDK that gives folks the ability to write and compile critical pieces of functionality in native code, closer to the processor without that pesky Java virtual machine standing in the way -- in other words, it's exactly what gamers and game devs need to make Android a serious gaming platform, and better access to badass 3D capabilities are a fun little piece of the puzzle. The latest NDK's available for download now -- so seriously, hurry up and go wow us with your revolutionary first-person shooter. Git!

iPad trainspotters divine e-book prices, My Documents and more from Oscar night commercial

Trainspotters, eagle-eyed bloggers, and tech detectives of all stripes have had a field day with last night's iPad commercial. At the very least, we got a pretty good look at some e-book prices, ranging from Ted Kennedy's True Compass: A Memoir ($14.99) to Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Journey to Change the World... One Child at a Time by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin ($7.99). All gripping reads, for sure, and all more expensive than Amazon. In addition to all that, TUAW has made note of a New York Times button, possibly to bring up NYT bestsellers in the iBookstore. Delving deeper into the UI, a look at the Pages iWork app has revealed a button labeled My Documents (where have we heard that one before?). But Oscar night is not the only place for iPad leaks: according to a tipster named James Barcellano, close viewing of the iPad keynote video has revealed an "Open In..." button during the viewing of a PDF attachment in mail. Perhaps this is an indication that the device's file system will be a tad more open than we were expecting. Or maybe not! You know how these things go. One more pic after the break.

Motorola Backflip doesn't allow non-Market apps, proves AT&T doesn't get Android

Let's step into the time warp, shall we? Specifically, we'd like to go back to our interview of AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega at MWC last year when we asked him about the carrier's support for Android (or lack thereof):
Chris: Okay, and expanding on that a little bit, I heard you speak at CTIA last year and you mentioned that... you mentioned basically the same comments about Android at that time. You said that you thought that it was promising, you liked what you saw, but that was at a time when there were a lot of questions about why AT&T wasn't in the OHA. I'm wondering if your thoughts, your opinions have changed since then. Has AT&T's direction with Android changed at all?

Ralph: No, actually, I think that they have been somewhat validated in that... we like the Android as an operating system on its own, but we want to make sure that we have, and customers have the option, to put applications on that device that are not just Google applications, so when the G1 came out and T-Mobile launched it, it's primarily a Google phone. And we want to give customers the choice of other applications on that device, not just the same Google applications.

Chris: So you're basically waiting for Android to be de-branded, so to speak?

Ralph: Well, to be open. (Laughter.) Right? I mean, the whole idea behind Android is that it's gonna be an open OS, and so I don't wanna roll an open OS to market that has primarily Google apps on it, and I think that's gonna happen. I mean, I see a lot of activity, I think it's got a good future, and I think it makes a lot of sense that the OS is open-source, separate from Google apps that are also very good.
A year later, enter the Motorola Backflip -- AT&T's very first Android device. Does it hold true to de la Vega's principles? Well, it depends on whose glasses you read the statements through. Yes, true, it definitely doesn't have "primarily Google apps on it" thanks to the carrier's questionable decision to remove Google search and replace it with Yahoo -- but as for giving "customers the choice of other applications," that's another matter altogether. It seems that Backflips are being shipped without the ability to turn on non-Market installations, meaning that AT&T has effectively locked you into getting all of your content through the walled garden. Add in the Yahoo debacle and the egregious amount of unremovable crapware they've left in ROM, and we start to wonder: why did AT&T bother partnering up with Android if they weren't going to take it seriously? Certainly doesn't bode well for the Mini 3 and the rest of the pack, now, does it?

ASUS debuts business-minded PL30JT laptop

If there's one company that goes all out at CeBIT each year, its ASUS, as evidenced by the fact that we're still catching up with new products from the company the week after CeBIT. This one slipped under our radar at the show, but the folks at Softpedia managed to get a bit of hands-on time with the company's new PL30JT model, which looks more than a little like ASUS' previously announced UL30 series. The big news with this one is the inclusion of NVIDIA GeForce 310M graphics with Optimus technology, which is complemented by a Core i5-520UM processor, a 13.3-inch 1,336 x 768 display, up to 8GB of RAM, a max 640GB hard drive, and ASUS' own Turbo33 technology, which promises to "enhance performance by up to 33%." No word on a price or release date just yet, but this wasn't one of the models promised in ASUS' initial batch of Optimus-enabled laptops.

[Thanks, Martin]

Dell Adamo XPS order page falls off Dell.com, discontinued for life?

Where art thou Dell Adamo XPS? That's the question this poor error page seems to be asking when customers attempt to order the insanely thin laptop on Dell's site. Though it only went on sale back in late November, Dell.com no longer has the crazily designed, $1,799 laptop up for purchase. We're currently trying to get official word from Dell, but all is not lost for those that feel they've made the biggest mistake in the world by not ordering the ULV laptop that only lasts less than two hours on a charge -- it's still available from Best Buy and Amazon.com. Stay tuned for more news as we do a bit of digging on this one.

Acer Touch-Based Keyboard Part of Super-Thin Laptop Design

Things are getting thinner. It’s looking like “thin” may be the new “small,” when it comes to the tech industry. It’s been a long time coming, truth be told, and as long as all our gadgets don’t start snapping in half like a thin stick, we’re happy with where this could all lead to. Companies like Acer want to help us get there, by offering up some pretty intuitive ideas, even if it does scare us that our screen may not be encased by anything at all.

Acer logo

What we mean is, to save the laptop’s thinness, Acer wants to create a laptop that uses a frameless screen. Acer wants to use Corning’s reinforced class substrate, and therefore you won’t be seeing the traditional encasement over your screen. Acer would just like to color the back of the substrate to match their needs, and go from there. This design methodology works on two fronts: one, it will allow for the laptop to be incredibly thin on the “top-half,” and also reduce material costs for the company. Again, as long as our gadgets are safe in normal every day use, we’re fine with this.

On the “bottom-half,”, we’ve got the keyboard. Traditionally, this is where the majority of the weight, size, and everything else goes, so Acer has a plan for this as well. They want a touch-based keyboard. No “physical” keys, but more akin to what you’d see on your touchscreen phone. We understand that there is a pretty thick line out there, dividing those who like touchscreen keyboards and those who want a more traditional one, so this would probably be chalked up to personal taste more than anything else. There isn’t any word on pricing yet, but Acer does plan to have this laptop out some time in the second half of this year. So, start counting down the months.

MSI U160 Goes the Official Route, Available Now

MSI Computers has officially announced the availability of their latest Wind model netbook, the U160. This particular model is actually the winner of the 2010 iF Product Design award, and the company is proud to finally bring the product to the consumers. They’re also happy to be abandoning the far more traditional, and perhaps over-used, clamshell design of netbooks. They’re going the route of a far more sophisticated look, and we have to say we like the aesthetics.

MSi Wind

The U160 features the Pine Trail platform, the second model to do so from MSI’s line-up, and it’s powered by the 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor. The netbook is Energy Star Efficient, and in point of fact, while utilizing the MSI-exlusive ECO mode, the battery will last you 15 hours. So while running in this mode, you’ll be safe going outside, and away from a plug to power your gadget. Which is a plus in our book.

Aesthetically, the MSI U160 has a lot of improvements. The chiclet keyboard is easy to type on, and the expanded, seamless touchpad makes it a lot easier to utilize the body of the netbook as a whole. The MSI logo on the back cover lights up when in use, so that’s a little feature that we know a few people out there will enjoy. The display is 10-inches and backlit by LEDs. Under the hood, we have 1GB of DDR2 memory; 160GB hard drive; the 6-cell battery; Bluetooth connectivity, and it’s running Windows 7 Starter Edition. MSI threw in an extra feature: the U160 also includes their facial recognition software, EasyFace, to help secure their product. The US160, as we mentioned above, is available right now from brick-and-mortar stores like Fry’s Electronics, but can also be ordered from Newegg.com and Buy.com. The new stylish netbook will cost you $379.99

Archos's budget Vision A43VB PMP caught on camera making kittens sad (video)
It's been a few months since we last heard of Archos's supposed new player lineup, as all the talk lately has been tablet-this and tablet-that, but we finally have some video of a new Vision device, the A43VB. Somewhat tragically, though, it apparently is not a real Archos device at all, rather a re-branded discount media player given the Archos silkscreen and a UI refresh. The good news is this means a low cost -- just €99 (or $135) -- for this 8GB model with a 4.3-inch screen and microSD expansion, but the bad news is that the result is slightly janky. The plastic looks rough and the UI far from intuitive, leaving our friendly video guide below to decry "I cannot exit the cats." That said, this is not a final device we're looking at here, so with any luck things will be a bit cleaned up inside and out before retail. Just don't go hoping for a surprise infusion of Android before then.

AmbienTec's SolarFold and SolarFan charge your gadgets, are now available without perscription (video)
You might expect a product from a company called AmbienTech to make you a bit drowsy, but we're thinking this pair of solar chargers are actually rather interesting. For one thing, they aren't just concepts: they're available for purchase right now -- or at least they are in Japan. They're called SolarFold and SolarFan, two designs that both deliver four panels of sperical-based solar cells, comprised of 1,900 globes each, making them slightly flexible and rather more durable than your average photovoltaic. They're reasonably efficient, too, delivering 2W over USB and, in 10 minutes, are able to charge an iPhone enough to make a 3 minute call. (We'll leave it as a reader exercise to figure out how many days would be required for a full charge.) Both models are available now for ¥22,050 (about $250), but only the fan comes with a cool little tripod, making the decision of which to buy a little easier.

High-speed, medium-format DM40 DSLR puts Mamiya back in the money again

High-speed, medium-format DM40 DSLR puts Mamiya back in the money again
The last time we heard from Mamiya it was doing something rather shocking: selling a camera for less than $10k! For a moment we were worried that this medium-format camera company with large-format MSRPs was letting the economy dictate its designs, but its latest entrant quashes those fears, priced at a solid $19,990 ($21,990 if you want the 80mm lens). It's the DM40, a 40 megapixel medium-format body that can manage 60fps frames per minute, making it the fastest in this class of sensor. As per usual for Mamiya it sports CompactFlash storage along with FireWire output for those doing it live from the studio. Bodies are shipping soon, so get ready to sign that mortgage over.

Update: As many commenters pointed out, that's 60 frames per minute, not per second. Still the fastest, believe it or not.

Verizon plays the obvious card: its 4G trials are faster than 3G

As the clock ticks down on Verizon's opening salvo of commercial LTE availability, PR noise is growing into a dull roar -- not to say we necessarily mind, considering how desperately we're looking forward to more 4G footprint in the States. Today, the company is reporting that engineers have managed to coax up to 40-50Mbps down and 20-25Mbps up out of its test networks currently deployed in Boston and Seattle -- not what we can expect in a real-world environment where you're on a train surrounded by obstacles and other people trying to use the network, but a pretty nice, round set of numbers nonetheless. In actual usage, they're reporting more down-to-Earth figures of 5-12Mbps down (count on 5) and 2-5Mbps up (count on 2), which still bests EV-DO Rev. A by a healthy margin. Of course, this is just the beginning -- LTE will get better over time -- so this sounds like a nice start.

ThinkPad T410 has its innards exposed for the sake of a component upgrade guide

What's better than a ThinkPad? Why, a torn down ThinkPad, of course. Some enterprising souls over at ThinkPads.com have put together a memory and hard drive upgrade guide, which includes a number of illustrative shots displaying the exposed hardware. It turns out that the T410 is the first (outside of the T400s and older T4x models) T-series laptop to offer easy access to memory upgrades via the back of the machine. We're told that since the T60 came out, all RAM replacements have had to be performed by removing the keyboard to access the slots. That's still the case for one of the sticks, but at least the other one is accessible via the back, and there's also great praise heaped on Lenovo for their "perfect" slide-out hard drive tray, which apparently makes upgrading a cinch. Dream & Fly tiny hotel room is cool

A couple weekends ago, I was at a wedding that was held at a bed and breakfast out in the country. The nuptials were beautiful, but the guest rooms at the place left a lot to be desired and were much too rustic and small for most of the ladies (and the guys) at the wedding to endure. Dream & Fly has unveiled a new tiny hotel room concept aimed at use in airports that made the tiny rooms at the wedding look huge.

The Dream & Fly rooms are small, self-contained cubicles that have a tiny sink, shower, and bed for people stuck in an airport or other crowded place to sleep. Small the little room may be, but it would be infinitely better than having to try to sleep on those hard airport chairs during a long flight delay or layover.

The little room even has a flat screen TV on the wall near the foot of what appears to be a twin size bed. A table pulls out from the wall for your notebook too. I could see this being popular in places like Tokyo where space is at a premium. I see no toilet, so I hope you don’t mind using the shower to take a wiz.
